Special Constables

Special Constable is a uniformed civilian role, responsible for providing secure custody, transportation, and escort of persons in custody, ensuring the safety and security of the prisoner. Special Constables are also responsible for maintaining the safety and security of members of the public participating or present at court proceedings, while also maintaining security of all court buildings. Special Constables serve legal documents and other court orders. 

Shift Schedule:

Special Constables are typically hired part-time, with potential to increase to full-time as vacancies arise.

Special Constables work schedules that may start as early as 0600h. Generally, shifts end at 1700h, but with prisoner transport days may end later.

Salary and Benefits

The hourly wage for special constables ranges from $33.18 to $38.15. Pay increases are based on the step progressions defined in the Kingston City Police Association Civilian Collective Agreement.

Health and Wellness Service

An on site Registered Occupational Therapist is available to provide wellness check-ins and support for all employees.

Onsite Gym and Sauna

Onsite fitness facilities available to all staff. The gym is accessible 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and is often used during members lunch breaks. Our gym includes a great variety of machine and free weights. Onsite saunas are also available.

Requirements

  • OACP certificate
  • Minimum of grade 12 or equivalent
  • Excellent physical condition and be able to pass an in-house fitness test and mandatory training
  • Valid Class G Ontario driver's license and suitable driving record
  • Valid First Aid and CPR Level C certificates
  • Must be medically fit and able to pass a 3rd party medical examination
  • Must be able to pass Psychological testing and interview with psychologist
  • Must pass a comprehensive background check, including but not limited to reference checks, verification of employment history and educational documents, credit history check, home visit, etc.

Application

Step 1 involves 2 actions:

  1. apply though our Application Portal to the Special Constable job posting
  2. upload all required documents

Once you have successfully completed the two actions you will receive an automated confirmation.

 

Required documentation includes:

  • cover letter
  • resume
  • current OACP certificate

Supporting documentation may include:

  • transcript(s) of educational achievements
  • two or more letters of reference related to employment or community service
  • certificates/letters from community involvement
  • certificates of achievement
  • copy of valid First Aid and CPR certificates
  • any other related documents you wish to include

 

If selected you will proceed through the following STEPS

lnterview

There is one in-person interview for the Special Constable position. If you are out of province or live several hours away, please let us know and we will arrange an online video interview.

 3 

Post-Interview Testing

If you are successful at the interview stage, you will move on to post-interview testing which includes:

  • a Pre-Background Questionnaire (PBQ)
  • psychological testing and interview with psychologist
  • third-party medical examination
  • driving evaluation test
  • fitness Testing including the Shuttle Run/Beep Test, Push-ups, Core Endurance - Back Extension  and the Sit and Reach

Candidates must obtain a minimum score of 5.5 on the Shuttle Run/Beep test.

These tests are a pass or fail only.  Failure to obtain a passing grade on one of these tests will end that candidates testing for this date.

If the candidate obtains a pass on the Shuttle Run/Beep test, they will proceed to the remaining tests of which they require a combined score of 75 percent to be successful.

The remaining fitness testing will consist of Push-ups (worth up to 20 points), Core Endurance - Back Extension (worth up to 20 points) and the Sit and Reach (worth up to 10 points). This score of up to 50 points will be calculated to a percentage, with 75 percent or higher being a pass.

 Background Check

Comprehensive background investigation, including but not limited to:

  • reference checks: personal, work and education
  • police records checks
  • driving records
  • verification of employment history
  • verification of educational documents
  • credit history check
  • home visit

Offer of Employment

Successful applicants are contacted and provided with an offer of employment. Starting dates are flexible and will be negotiated between the new hire and Kingston Police.
