Beat-Bicycle Officers
"Downtown, in the parks, on the trails – on their feet or on a seat - these officers will be there."
Beat-Bicycle Officers patrol the downtown core on foot or bicycle, as well as the trails and parks of Kingston. Their work involves responding to and investigating calls for service in these areas. The response may involve laying charges or seeking alternative measures and developing future strategies to deter crime.
Beat-Bicycle Officers also sit on several committees including the Downtown Business Improvement Area - Safety and Security Committee, the Encampment Working Group and others. They are involved in providing advice on Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) to individual businesses and residences to enhance safety and security. Beat-Bicycle Officers also provide input on new bylaws in the city as well as the strategic direction for the City of Kingston in view of increasing safety and security of all people.
Beat-Bicycle Officers attend any major events hosted in the downtown core, such as the Princess Street Promenade and others. Beat-Bicycle Officers will also team up with other CORE Unit members to attend major events throughout the city as needed.
Do you have what it takes?
Successful candidates to the Beat-Bicycle position must be able to comfortably alternate between enforcement and community engagement. Beat-Bicycle Officers must also have the ability to build rapport and connect with people from all walks of life. They will need to be able to speak confidently to complex community issues during committee meetings.
Beat-Bicycle Officers should also have a good memory for names and faces to build on established relationships with persons and businesses.
