Your personal safety is often a factor of being alert and aware of your surroundings and having some knowledge on how to stay safe. The following are some basic safety measures and tips for students to keep safe both on and off campus.
- Be aware of your surroundings and people around you both on and off campus.
- Use caution when taking unknown shortcuts through isolated parts of campus, especially at night and in secluded areas. Consider traveling with friends.
- If you must be in an isolated area (e.g., working or studying alone in labs or offices) lock the doors and tell a friend where you are and when you plan to leave.
- If you must travel alone, carry a cell phone, even if you have a cell phone, you should know the location of campus emergency telephones on your routes.
- Know the location of campus emergency telephones on routes to and from campus destinations.
- Keep personal belongings in view while eating, meeting, or shopping on campus.

Residence
- Lock your doors and windows and ensure your roommates lock when they leave.
- Avoid leaving valuables such as money, banking cards, laptops, smartphones, etc. out in the open.
- Even if you know and trust your roommates, you may not know their guests, so lock your bedroom at night.

Alcohol and/or drug consumption concerns
Consuming alcohol and/or drugs can make you more vulnerable, impair your judgement, reflexes and response time. If you choose to consume alcohol and/or drugs do so in moderation and do not drive.
You should always be aware of the source of the alcohol and/or drugs and consider it might be tainted or laced with dangerous and substances.
If you are going out drinking, have a group of trusted friends with you, along with someone who will remain sober to keep everyone safe and act as a designated driver.
