Individual arrested and charged following an incident involving an axe

On August 25, 2023, at approximately 9:45 p.m. the two victims were sitting in their vehicle in the waterfront area of Cataraqui Street in the City of Kingston.

While at this location the victims were approached by an individual who was wielding an axe. The victims, who feared for their safety, attempted to leave the area in their vehicle, however, an individual who had accompanied the accused to this location attempted to block their departure with a pickup truck.

Contact was made by the truck striking the car which caused the car to veer off to the right side of the road. The two victims contacted Kingston Police and immediately drove to police headquarters. While enroute to the police station the victims observed that they were being followed by the truck and that the accused was now in the vehicle as well. Further, the victims observed the truck stop briefly at which time the axe was disposed of. The truck then continued to police headquarters.

Police spoke with all involved parties and, after the axe was retrieved nearby, officers formed the grounds to lay criminal charges.

On August 26 at approximately 12:00 a.m. police arrested the accused who was held at police headquarters. The accused was later released on conditions with a future court date.

A 58-year-old local individual was charged with assault with a weapon and possession of a weapon dangerous to the public peace.

The 51-year-old local individual who was operating the pickup truck was charged with Careless Driving.
