Kingston Police K9 and officers track and locate suspects
On February 7, 2024 at approximately 2:30 a.m. staff at Joyceville Institution observed drone activity in the area of the institution.
The Kingston Police were contacted and members of the Patrol Division responded to the area.
Upon arrival, officers located a vehicle running in a nearby parking lot. Officers also located two occupants inside the vehicle.
Through the course of investigation, officers determined the occupants of the vehicle were involved in an attempt to introduce contraband into Joyceville Institution. Further investigation lead to the discovery of two sets of footprints leading into a wooded area adjacent to the parking lot. Upon making this discovery the officers requested the assistance of the Kingston Police Canine Unit.
The Canine Unit, including Police Service Dog “Dak” arrived on scene, and with the assistance of patrol officers, initiated a track. The track resulted in the location and successful apprehension of two individuals who were also involved in attempting to introduce contraband into Joyceville Institution.
While this was occurring, staff at Joyceville Instituion intercepted and seized three packages. The contraband and unauthorized items seized from these packages included tobacco, cannabis, edged weapons, as well as cell phones and cell phone accessories. The total estimated institutional value of these seizures is $70,000.
A search of the arrested parties and vehicle, lead to the discovery of a drone and drone accessories, packaging materials, a cell phone and cell phone accessories as well as a quantity of marijuana and tobacco.
An 18 year old Woodbridge individual, an 18 year old East York individual and a 20 year old Etobicoke individual were arrested and charged with mischief, possession for the purpose of distributing cannabis and trespass at a penitentiary.
A 26 year old Etobicoke individual was also arrested and charged with mischief, possession for the purpose of distributing cannabis, trespass at a penitentiary and two counts of fail to comply with release order.
All four individuals were transported to Kingston Police headquarters were they were held for a bail hearing.
