Kingston Police Recognizes Crime Prevention Week
Awareness in Action: Keeping Ontario Safe Together
The Kingston Police are recognizing Ontario’s annual Crime Prevention Week, which runs from November 3 to 9, 2024. The week-long promotion of crime prevention is supported by the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police (OACP), the Ministry of the Solicitor General, and police services across Ontario.
“People in our community deserve to live and work in a safe and healthy environment. Most types of crimes are preventable, and Crime Prevention Week is a great opportunity for everyone to consider what they can do to keep their families, neighbourhoods, schools, and workplaces safe from criminal activities.” said Deputy Chief Matt Funnell.
Ontario communities are among the safest in the world, but community safety and well-being takes awareness of dangerous situations that can lead to crime and collaboration to prevent crime from occurring. That’s why the Kingston Police is proud to partner with government, community leaders and organizations, young people, and businesses to prevent crime throughout our communities.
No one chooses to be a victim of crime, but when crime happens, it can have a profound effect on individuals, their families, and communities at large.
Crime Prevention Tips
• Call 9-1-1 if you witness a crime in progress or a possible crime in progress (e.g., break and enter) or a dangerous situation.
• Anonymously contact Crime Stoppers “See Something? Hear Something? Know Something? Contact Crime Stoppers” at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) or by texting “Tip 201” with your message to 274637 (crimes)
• Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) can be used to discourage criminal activity and promote safety.
• Increase street visibility around your house so that neighbours and others can see if someone is in your yard or trying your door locks.
• If your home is on a corner lot, your risk of burglary increases, so be sure to take additional security precautions.
• Thieves prefer residents not to be home, so leave lights on, get your mail collected, and take other steps to make it look like someone is home.
• Thieves like easy pickings, so target harden your home with outside lighting, good locks, alarms, and other home protection devices.
• Reach out, volunteer, and participate in your community.
• Get to know your neighbours. When you see something suspicious, don’t hesitate to call the police – promptness promotes prevention.
• Anticipate - observe - report - participate - PREVENT
