Shopping Cart used to Damage Vehicle

20-13502

A 48-year-old local man is facing charges of Mischief under $5,000 and two breaches of his probation after he became angry at two Home Base Housing staff and struck their vehicle with his shopping cart, causing damage in the process.

At approximately 11:00 a.m. on April 15, 2020 the two workers were in the area of Wellington St and Johnson St picking up meals to deliver to those in need when staff advised that the male, known to them, was appearing more erratic than usual. When the two Home Base Housing members began to call Kingston Police to assist with a welfare check, the accused observed them in their vehicle, became angry, yelling at them, and began smashing the shopping cart in his possession against the passenger side door multiple times.

The accused left on foot but uniform patrol officers quickly located him in the area of Wellington St and Brock St. He was visibly agitated but officers were able to de-escalate the situation and arrest him without incident. Due to his mental health concerns and lengthy history with Kingston Police he was lodged in cells to attend a bail hearing the following day.
