Two arrested after K9 track

On Thursday June 13, 2024, at approximately 7:00 p.m. members of the Kingston Police Patrol Division responded to a report of two individuals attempting to throw packages over the wall at Collins Bay Institution.

 

Officers received information from correctional staff that the individuals were last observed fleeing into the field directly behind the institution. Members of the Kingston Police Emergency Response Unit as well as the K-9 Unit attended to assist with the investigation.

 

Kingston Police K-9 “Dak” was able to establish a track which subsequently led to the discovery and arrest of two individuals who were hiding in a swamp behind the institution.

 

Both individuals were arrested and transported to Kingston Police Headquarters where they were held for a bail hearing.

 

A 23-year-old North York individual and an 18-year-old Toronto individual were jointly charged with mischief endangering life, conspiracy to commit an indictable offence, trespass at a penitentiary, possession of cannabis for the purpose of distributing and traffic in a schedule 1 substance.

 

Additionally, the 18-year-old individual who is on bail for committing several violent offences in the Toronto area, including three armed robberies was also charged with three counts of fail to comply with release order.

 

A quantity of marijuana, tobacco and crystal methamphetamine was seized in relation to this investigation. As well officers seized cell phones and cell phone accessories which the individuals were attempting to introduce into the institution. The total institutional value of all items seized is approximately $41,000.
