Welfare check leads to large firearms seizure.

On August 28, 2024, at approximately 8:15 p.m. members of the Kingston Police Patrol Division attended a residence in the area of Wellington Street and Gore Street to conduct a welfare check on an individual. Police had previously been contacted by the individual’s family with concerns for their mental and physical well-being.

 

On arrival officers found the individual’s residence insecure and entered to ensure their well-being. Once inside the residence, officers located a large number of firearms and ammunition, which included a loaded AK-47 and five loaded AK-47 magazines, stored in a careless manner throughout the home.

 

While officers were present the individual returned home. Once the individual’s well-being was established and it was determined the individual was not in need of assistance they were placed under arrest in relation to numerous firearms offences.

 

The Kingston Police enlisted the assistance of the Provincial Weapons Enforcement Unit who obtained a warrant for the residence which resulted in the seizure of more evidence.

 

The 53-year-old Kingston individual was charged with seven counts of possess firearm while prohibited, five counts of possess restricted or prohibited firearm without a license, store firearm carelessly, store ammunition carelessly, possess loaded regulated firearm, unlicensed person possess prohibited ammunition, possess prohibited/restricted weapon knowing no authority.

 

The individual was transported to Kingston Police Headquarters where they were held for a bail hearing.
