The Kingston Police are warning the public about an on-going telephone scam commonly known as a “grandparent” or “emergency” scam. Police have received an increase in reports regarding this scam. This type of scam generally targets senior citizens by contacting them via telephone and informing them a member of their family, often a child or grandchild has been arrested, often following a supposed car accident.

On February 4, 2024, at approximately 1:45 p.m. the accused was operating a tractor trailer on Highway 401 westbound through Kingston. The accused attempted to exit at the Highway 38 exit and while driving on the westbound offramp left the roadway on the west side of the off ramp and struck a metal tower. The tractor trailer came to rest facing south with the trailer partially blocking the off ramp and the cab stuck in the ditch.

On February 4, 2024, at approximately 7:40 a.m. police responded to a call regarding an assault which had occurred at a residence on Kingsdale Avenue in Kingston’s west end.

This Facebook phishing scam starts with a post from a friend that says, “I can’t believe he is gone. I’m gonna miss him so much.” The post contains a link to a news article or video, but when you click the link, you are taken to a web page that prompts you to log in to Facebook. If you enter your information, you are taken to an unrelated page. No news article exists, but scammers have just stolen your Facebook credentials using a phishing attack.

On February 4, 2024, at approximately 12:30 a.m., the two accused youths arrive on foot at a business in the area of Bath Road and Princess Street in the City of Kingston. As the two approached the business they began yelling at two other individuals who were about to enter the premises.

This recent scam is impressively complex. The cybercriminals start by impersonating law enforcement officers. They contact you, claiming that your bank account may have been involved in financial fraud. You’re then asked to download a mobile app to help them investigate further. If you download the app, the cybercriminal walks you through the steps to set this scam in motion.

On January 30, 2024, at approximately 8:35 p.m. police responded to a call regarding an individual causing a disturbance at a restaurant near the intersection of Princess Street and Sir John A. Macdonald Boulevard in midtown Kingston.

On January 31, 2024, investigators with the Kingston Police Street Crime Unit, with the assistance of the Emergency Response Unit and the Patrol Division, executed a search warrant at a residence on Grey Street in the City of Kingston.

The accused had been riding a Kingston Transit bus and had just gotten off in the area of Portsmouth Avenue north of King Street West in midtown Kingston. At approximately 11:30 a.m., while the bus was stopped to pick up other passengers, and for reasons unknown, the accused proceeded to punch one of the windows of the bus causing it to break.

On January 6, 2024, at approximately 4:20 a.m. a break and enter occurred at a school located in Kingston’s west end. The suspect was captured on security video walking through the halls of the school prior to the arrival of security officers.
