Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Unit

"We deal with the worst of the worst offenders."

The Sex Assault and Child Abuse (SACA) is tasked with investigating the most heinous crimes committed against another person; and sometimes these crimes are perpetrated against children.

SACA Detectives have training in interviewing techniques, forensic interviewing, and conducting interviews with children. They will attend and analyze crime scenes, canvass areas to locate and speak with potential witnesses, and write warrants for DNA and other evidence.

SACA works with several units in the investigations to apprehend suspects and execute warrants as necessary. Additionally, SACA Detectives have developed strong relationships with several agencies to support the victims in their on-going recovery. These outside agencies include Victim Services, and Family and Children's Services of Frontenac, Lennox and Addington.

SACA also relies on Kingston General Hospital’s Sex Assault/Domestic Violence nurses who specialize in assisting victims, conducting examinations, and collecting DNA with kindness and empathy.

The Centre of Forensic Sciences in Toronto is also utilized for expert DNA analysis and comparison.

Do you have what it takes?

Successful candidates must be particularly sensitive and empathetic due to the traumatic nature of these crimes where victims are often vulnerable persons and sometimes children.

Along with proven investigative skills candidates need to be thorough, and meticulous. They should be highly driven, possess excellent writing skills, and have a desire to learn new procedures and investigative techniques.

SACA Detectives also need strong resiliency as these investigations are some of the most appalling crimes committed by the worst offenders. Despite the challenges, the highly personal nature of these crimes makes solving them very meaningful. Successfully prosecuting these crimes has a substantial impact on the safety and well-being of the most vulnerable members of our community.
