Kingston Police and OPP face off against Napanee Golden Hawks for charity hockey game
While officially outside of their jurisdiction, Kingston Police, along with counterparts Lennox and Addington O.P.P., were the away hockey team as they took on the Napanee District Secondary School Golden Hawks February 7th for a friendly competition, with the ultimate goal to support local organizations.
Initiated by Kingston Police Sergeant Shawn Birney and the NDSS Student Council, the event was scheduled for Rec Program students to make a donation to attend the game and be bussed to the Best and Bash Arena to cheer on their team. Progressing into the third period the game was tied, but the police team scored a go-ahead goal, adding an empty netter in the final minute to take the game 5-3.
Between ticket sales, a ‘Chuck-a-Duck’ competition between periods, and a donation from Big D’s for every French fry meal sold, an initial total of $1,360 was raised to support the Morningstar Mission and Lennox and Addington OSPCA. With RBC providing an additional $1,500 towards the Mission, a grand total of $2,860 was raised.
Shawn Birney stated, “This wouldn’t have been able to come together without the help of Napanee Student Council, the Rec Program, RBC, OSPCA, MyFM, Napanee Beaver, Kingston Police, and Napanee OPP. It took a lot of people to bring this together and all the money raised is going to go to a great cause whether it’s the Humane Society or Morningstar Mission. I know our two rooms had a blast with it. It was a competitive game all the way through. There were smiles across the bench with us and it was great day by all. I really appreciate all the support from the community.”
